Not all "cels" are created equal

The word "cel" covers a canyon of value. Original production cels — actually photographed under the camera for a film — are the trophies, and early ones with original backgrounds or Courvoisier setups reach serious five figures. Hand-painted limited editions made for galleries trade in the hundreds to low thousands. Sericels — screen-printed editions — are lovely wall art worth far less than their 1990s gallery prices. Sellers get hurt in both directions: giving away a production cel priced like a sericel, or expecting sericel money nobody will pay. We identify exactly what you have and price it against real sold comparables.

Provenance and paper matter: gallery certificates, seals, studio stamps and original invoices all move the number. Bring or photograph everything — including the back of the frame.

Condition is everything (and fragile)

Cel paint cracks, lifts and separates; backgrounds fade; tape and non-archival mats do slow damage. If your cels have lived in frames for thirty years, don't open them up — photograph them framed, glare and all, and let us assess. Our guide to storing and displaying collectibles covers what to do (and not do) in the meantime.

✦ Questions we hear ✦

ANSWERED HONESTLY

How do I know if my Disney cel is an original production cel?

Look for studio seals or stamps, registration peg holes, paint applied by hand on the reverse, and paperwork from the studio or original gallery. Sericels are screen-printed with uniform ink and usually carry edition numbering. Send photos, front and back — we identify what you have as part of the offer.

What are Disney sericels worth?

Honestly: usually $50–$300 today, often less than their original 1990s gallery price. Hand-painted limited editions do better; original production art does far better. We price by what each actually is.

Should I remove my cel from its frame before selling?

No — opening a frame risks paint lift and mat damage. Photograph it framed and let a buyer who handles animation art do any unframing.
